I love photographing English church weddings - it's probably my most favourite part of shooting a wedding whether it's a hot summer’s afternoon or a howling gale in winter - it always make me feel privileged to be the one documenting it all.
I've had a love of English churches for as long as I can remember - born of having an architect/ historian father who throughout my childhood introduced me and my sister Imogen to numerous churches around the country (not for religious reasons at all but to instill in us an appreciation of history and English craftsmanship). We literally could not pass one without my father pulling up the car and saying 'We’ll just have a quick look', and although we dragged our feet (especially in our early teens), I now have an equal love of them that has definitely chimed with my experience of being a wedding photographer.
This was a 14-hour day for me starting at 9.30am with a shoot in the grounds of Sophie's extraordinarily beautiful Phillip Webb (another of my father's favourites) home and finishing with full on partying late into the evening.
There was sunshine yes at this wedding, but it can’t be denied that rain came in continuous torrential downbursts and then solidly throughout the afternoon. Sophie and Tom didn’t appear to mind one bit - they were far too happy to worry about what the skies were doing and I was okay too because I was prepared and I’ve shot many rain-drenched but yes, equally glorious weddings!
Although no one ideally wants rain, contrary to what most of my clients think, rain can bring bags of atmosphere and character to a wedding - bringing people together and somehow to relax and be more themselves perhaps. It does take some additional skills and ability to think on your feet (as well as sometimes getting royally soaked!), not to be phased - and to be glad to have worked out a ‘plan for rain’ for those family group photographs which is what I do for every wedding that wants these.
Sophie and Tom were married at her local church – St Mary’s, Pakenham in Suffolk – just a 5 min walk from the family home where the reception was held for the drinks, dinner and dancing to end all dancing late into the evening.
Here are some of my favourite images from Sophie & Tom’s wedding day.
